Dear Ellen,

dscn2884.JPGMy squirrel is definitely a male…in fact, he ascribes to high society and like to dress to the nines and head out for a night on the town…A squirrel’s squirrel, squirrel about town.  He is about to jump into a box to head to Brooklyn.  I’ll let you know if he makes it into the Top 10 for innernet voting!  Now I need to shower and get headed to the airport.  I should be out the door in 20 minutes.  Will I make it???

A Bit Squirrelly Around Here

Dear Ellen,

dscn2878.JPGI have been seduced by the “It Takes a Tree” contest at Brooklyn General Store.  Instead of finishing Like Buttah, I spent the last two days making a new friend.  (He has pipe cleaners in his arms and tail for posing!)  My original plan was to make a baby front carrier, baby squirrel, baby squirrel toy, shawl, etc. to fit my creation out as a momma, but I keep getting a vibe off this squirrel that he’s a he and not a she.  I’ve put him up as a project as Squirrel About Town and think he’s going to end up with a top hat and tails instead of the baby paraphenelia.  I’ll let him rest for a few days.  As long as I have him in the mail by next week, he should make the deadline.  (Stay tuned for sex change operations as I figure out his/her actual identity.)

dscn2872.JPGLike Buttah did get some great knitting while I was on travel to California.  I intend to finish it up this week.  It really has been a fast and easy knit.  Very good for long plane flights on which I was struggling with fatigue.  I was able to score dinner with Jeanne and Frank while I was out there.  It was really nice to have a chance to see them — had been way too long!

Yesterday we drove to Pennsylvania to set stakes marking the edges of the house and garage so we could get a better feel for how it will sit on our property.  jan-in-hat-1.JPGIt is really making it all feel very real…so exciting!  We’re tracking towards a late summer ground breaking…fingers crossed!  And when we got back, I had to get out my finest hat so we could go to friends’ 136th Kentucky Derby party.  Neither of us got to see our chosen horses make it into the winner’s circle, but we did enjoy some great barbecue and time with friends.

Short post tonight…spent too much time with my new friend today!

P.S. I have to adjust the resolution on the new header before I can put it up…will try to get that nailed down this week as well.   Stayed up just a bit later…and got it right on the first try.  Facelift complete…for now.  (I guess it was really just a lid lift.)  Dear Readers, be sure to “Refresh” several times till you get the new look on your screen!

My wheel is a Louet.  Alli (or Alli McWheel) could be a nickname for Allouette.  But a lovelier interpretation would be the French translation of allouette - skylark.

Because Jenny already owns the prize I was going to send, I am sending her something else.  This leaves the other prize up for grabs.  It will go to the person who posts comment number 2000 (not counting any comments Jan or I leave from now until we hit it).   It could come quickly, so say “hi! right away!

Sock Wars V

Dear Ellen,

dscn2278.JPGI don’t know if you were tuned in or not to the fact that Sock Wars V is going on right now.  I was a warrior, albeit briefly.  I did finish one sock and started on the cuff of the second before being killed.  It was insane to have enrolled — it started right as the heavy lifting for my current class got going…and then the tragedy in Haiti consumed a good bit of attention too.  Nonetheless, once entered I had to make a stab at making a kill despite the amount of time (or lack thereof) I would have to dedicate to the effort.  I was killed within the week.  I have some comfort in that my assassin and her assassin are also dead.  I was working with Alpaca with a Twist Socrates — found that I really enjoy working with this yarn and will probably end up with more in my stash one day.  It’s a lovely blend of alpaca, merino, bamboo and nylon with medium stitch definition, a nice luxe feel as you knit and a resulting fabric that feels soft and warm with some drape, but still has structure.  It worked well with the stitch pattern for the socks which were the Jekyll and Hyde pattern. 

Death SocksAnd even though I was killed, my death came with some very nice socks in teals and blues.  They were made by Raveler cfabrication.  More pictures are here.  I like it when no one is really a loser.

KATRINA and LV2KNIT!  (Evidently that finger crossing paid off!) I’ll edit this post later today someday before I die to show the goodies that will be heading their way for the first and second prizes.  In the meantime, you all can be winners if you take some time to go exploring some of the fabulous blogs belonging to those who commented on the contest entry.  We have a very talented community developing here and I love that our blog might be a means for some of you to make connections. Thank you all for the well wishes, and Ellen and I both intend to keep this going.  We’ve even started talking about a future in coming years that might include taking Twin Set Designs to the next level.  We’ll see.  And we hope you’ll continue along with us.  Ciao!  Jan

Guess what, Ellen?  We are approaching our 2nd anniversary in just a few days (the 30th)!  To commemorate, I am unilaterally deciding that a contest is in order.  (I am seizing the opportunity of your trip out of town to take control.)

Contest rules — It’s easy-peasy.  Just post a comment to this post.  We’d love to hear from all of you — lurkers and commenters alike.  It can be a simple “Congratulations on 2 years!” or some comment about what you’ve enjoyed, learned, laughed at, been inspired by as you’ve read along with us.  I’ll use a random number generator to choose the winner and will contact you by private message so I can find out how to have your prize delivered.  Comments by either Ellen or me will not be included in the contest.  Comments must be posted by midnight September 30, 2009 Eastern Time.  Don’t worry if your post doesn’t show right away.  If you’re a first time poster, your comment will be in line for approval and will get time stamped for the time you submitted, not for when it makes its way to the site.
