Dear Ellen,
The Fishtail Fantasy socks seemed to fly off the needles. I don’t know if it’s because I wanted to get them to Vanessa quickly or because the pattern just works up that quickly or because I’ve spent 20% of my life in airplanes over the last few weeks. Probably the latter (and yes, there is some exaggeration there, though it surely feels that way!). At any rate, they are done and I will mail them tomorrow with goodies from Alaska and DC.
Did I mention Vx is a BIG Obama fan? Since I had to go brief HASC and SASC staffers this week I got the chance to score a nice collection of Obamaniac souveniers at the airport. I’m sure she’ll especially love the “First Lady” breath mints, though the White House toothbrush will be in hot competition. She is not well — surgery yesterday to explore why her liver seems to be slowly failing. They actually hope it’s tumors so they have something to try to fix it. I will cast on another project for her immediately. Keep her in your thoughts.
Love, Jan

The socks are really great. Even better than the White House toothbrush. Vx is lucky to have a friend like you to help her along this very painful road. I was thinking about her today, before I read your post. A friend has a nice photo of Darwin as his desktop and I related your visit to Down House.
Isn’t “the White House” kind of funny when you think about it? I mean the Russians get “the Kremlin”, the Brits get “Buckingham Palace (or “10 Downing Street” if you want to get all elected about it) and we get “the White House”. I’m not sure whether I should be pleased with our humility or a little miffed that less imagination was shown.
I am so amazed by Vx (and I LOVE her abbreviated moniker). I am so glad she didn’t leave us before seeing Obama start to change the landscape of politics. I think his messages this last week or so have been just what I was looking for when I voted for him - messages of responsibility, not retribution, despite what some on the far left are screaming for. And I consider myself far left, as you well know.
Peace.

It sounds like you’re knitting and gathering up the best mojo there is for you friend. I’ll keep her in my thoughts, too. The socks are absolutely gorgeous, btw!
