Hi, Jan,
It really was lousy that the US Navy required your presence overseas this last weekend. Patty and Beth and I had such a tremendous time holed up in a cabin on Lake Erie; the only flaw was pointed out on roughly an hourly basis as someone would sigh, “I wish Jan were here.”
.
.
we cooked (simple but yummy stuff like black bean burritoes and cheese grits with eggs from Patty’s chickens),
.
.
we hiked enough to feel virtuous,
.
.
.
.
.
.
And with a nod to the season, the weekend was over way too fast.
Next time, we insist that you go AWOL.
Love,
Ellen

Quite unfair that anyone should have to miss out on such a lovely sisterly adventure!

Okay, so it really wasn’t the Navy — remember, I’m on the Joint Staff now and not allowed to represent a service position. So, it was the Joint world that called me to duty. I was able to have some fun in London, so don’t feel too badly for me…but I really would have loved to have been with you guys! Nice to know you kept thinking of me!

It looks like a wonderful weekend, and it sounds like Jan was there in spirit!
