Ellen’s 2008 Virtual Holiday Altar
The holiday cactus made it through Thanksgiving and from the new buds showing up, just might make it to the solstice.

Just as I went to bed, it started to snow. I had to wait until morning to get this shot. I think we’ll start December with proper decoration.

Our simple outdoor lighting scheme is calming.
I sit inside in the dark living room and just breathe most evenings

My future SIL not only does dishes, he professes to like it.

One of the sweet traditions in R&D at my company is the making of the caramel.
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Each year, the retiree group at work sells poinsettias to raise money for a local nonprofit that provides disability therapy. I write my small check sometime in early November and magically, a beautiful plant shows up on my desk in early December.
………………………………………………………….
I must have been inspired, because I came home and finished the ribbing on the fronts of my Bohus sweater.

Friday, December 5
We’ve spent the evening in front of a lovely fire, knitting, watching TV, and sipping wine, Jenny and me.
…………………………………………………
We had a brief period of those giant snowflakes yesterday, the ones that almost thud when they land.
…………………………………………………
These have been a family tradition since the ladies were wee girls.
…………………………………………………
I love the nascent sense of the human form demonstrated by the toddler. The kindergartner is much more sophisticated, but you gotta love the human tadpoles.

Tuesday, December 9
She is so cute with those blue eyes and blonde red hair, how can we turn down her invitation to join her to view episodes of Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip on her computer?
…………………………………………………
We have cracked open a bottle of bubbly to celebrate our English major’s performance on the GRE’s.
……………………………………………………..
Do you recognize this Mary? She’s showing her age with the loss of an eye, but hey, we’re not so young anymore either. She comes out every year with my creche and watches from the side, one of those touchstones from childhood.
………………………………………………………………….
I am the lucky recipient of the creche that Wilson’s grandma displayed in her home.

Sure, it is pretty sentimental, but if you pay attention, there are loads of great lines. And it does take one to the heart of the season.
………………………………………………………………….
I have made it to the bottoms of the armscyes.

One nice thing about really cold weather is the potential for sun dogs, aka parhelia, which form when ice crystals in the atmosphere reflect the sun’s rays.

Can you see that aroma rising from the pan?

Wednesday, December 17 Last night Becky and I went to dinner at Cam Ranh Bay, a local Vietnamese restaurant. It is something wonderful to have someone who was so important in one’s childhood in one’s life as an adult.
Thursday, December 18
How can we love one another well when we are in one another’s presence? This is the question I will try to carry in my heart as I head to Ohio on Monday.
………………………………………
Both the snowflakes and the cookies have been coming fast today.
………………………………………………………………
We were lucky enough to have sundogs twice in one week. this time on our way to breakfast with Becky and Michael and Claire and Max. It was great to see all of them, people and pups.
……………………………………………………………..
…my holiday gifts to the hot tub ladies. That is Kidsilk Haze on size 13 16?circs, 56 stitches worth, join in circle. Knit until bored. Six of these tubular scarfs makes a cloud of incredible loveliness.
……………………………………….
Tuesday was a brief stop in to Marietta to see Eloise. She was glad to have a chance to see the granddaughters, especially, and to parade us around the center.

Christmas Eve!
The cutting and decorating of the Christmas tree was a highlight of Christmas Eve.
…………………………………..
Christmas itself was long and merry. We have turkey dinner in front of us and plenty of new books to keep us amused. Ganymede doesn’t need books to amuse himself.
………………………………………………………
We extend Christmas to the 26th, enjoying the traditional reading of Silver Packages (handkerchiefs required).

Saturday, December 27
The day was incredibly warm.

We had poetry reading and carols and games.
